I am a huge fan of pen and paper Role Playing Games. To get my fix I like to go out and find one of the many Podcasts that revolved around this topic. The problem with this genre of Podcasts is each one sounds the same. You hear a bit of banter, some dice rolls, and a little bit of action. What happens to me during these Podcasts is a disconnect from the story being played. This is where we get to a completely different style of D&D Podcast Caverns and Comedians. That is the reason I have chosen them for the First Ever Bros Love Podcast review 001 Bros Love Podcast Caverns and Comedians.
Caverns and Comedians is a Dungeons and Dragons based Podcast from a group of Canadian Comedians. Just like any D&D game the group gets together to roll some dice. Except you as the listener get to skip all the dice rolling and get right into the action. At first I thought this would be a bit of a let down but skipping the dice rolls and the back and forths you get to enjoy the hilarious adventure.
When it comes to Podcast intro music if it goes on for a long time I’m quick to hit the skip button. Caverns and Comedians intro has a fantasy adventure sound that doesn’t drag too long. Then a voice over describes quickly and efficiently what the Podcast is about. As far as intro to a Podcast goes this is one of the best.
When it comes to D&D Podcast they can drag on for a long time. Most of this comes from banter back and forth between the Podcasters about topics not related to the adventure. These shows are examples of what it’s like to play D&D in real life. The problem is you start to lose track of the adventure. This is also very similar to playing D&D in real life. The issue is that when listening to a Podcast you want to be entertained and Caverns and Comedians does an excellent job keeping your attention.
This is a huge undertaking by Caverns and Comedians to edit out the dice rolls, rule lookups, banter, and other things that do not move the adventure forward. This creates episodes that take much longer to record and edit but provide an excellent package for the listener. I would like to take this opportunity to give them a round of applause for the work that goes into creating their Podcast.
Content is one of the strongest pieces of Caverns and Comedians. The adventure starts and you are expecting a typical D&D Podcast. Quickly you learn that this is something much better and much different. You get to follow a group of adventurers who do all they can not to trip over themselves and even when they do it is hilarious.
One of the toughest problems in D&D Podcast is that they mostly follow the typical adventure. Caverns and Comedians is not running a typical adventure and is extremely unique. Not to spoil too much but I have never played a game or heard a game where the adventurers appear on a gameshow.
The Adventures that are part of the Podcast play their Characters very well. Each one has their own unique personality and each one will make you laugh. Agata Stokys is a Human Cleric who doesn’t let anyone push her around and hates healing people. Balgor is a bit of a loof but strong. Finnick Fleetfoot is a Lightfoot Halfling Rogue with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Fook Wimbles is a awkward sexually charged Gnome Paladin with a bit of a memory problem. Hank Brody is one of the newer additions who has found himself stuck with the group of misfits. Lastly there is Mawldar Sly a paranoid Tiefling Warlock who will be missed.
As far as Podcast Audio Quality goes this is top notch. For all the Editing that takes place to edit out dice rolls and other banter it comes across as one smooth recording. This has been one of the strongest pieces of the Caverns and Comedians Podcast since Episode 1.
Growth From First -> Middle -> To Newest Episode
Starting out a D&D campaign can be awkward at first especially when you deal more with the Role Playing part. Each adventurer from Episode one has gone full steam ahead with their characters in Caverns and Comedians. This has a lot to do with the Dungeon Master who does a great job playing NPC and making this adventure come to life. A lot of times DM’s will be the weaker of the characters but in Caverns and Comedians the DM is right on par with the Adventurers.
Cavern and Comedians has been running Bi-Weekly since April 26th 2016. Since starting the Podcast they have been releasing regularly. This is a huge piece for a Podcast because as a listener you are expecting a new episode every other week. The part that is impressive with Caverns and Comedians is that it isn’t simply a Record everyone Playing D&D and release but it is more of Play D&D, lots of Editing, then release. To get everyone in the same room every two weeks shows that each of the participants really enjoy their Podcast.
This is a section to bring some light to the pieces of a Podcast that get very little love. The Show Notes that show up as a description of the episode can range from long form to a few sentences. Cavern and Comedians is the later with a few quick sentences about what is happening in the episode. I typically like this spot to have a little extra info on the episode maybe a credits of who is starring in the episode as well as links to any important places on the internet be it Twitter, Website, Facebook, or email.
Caverns and Comedians is part of Kicks and Giggles Entertainment and the website is used for a number of different projects from the group. Since this isn’t a site specifically dedicated to Caverns and Comedians there is a lot of other information on the Projects Kicks and Giggles has active. This makes it a bit difficult to get right to Caverns and Comedians but once you navigate to the correct location there is a great bio on each character and a good overview of the show.
I absolutely love this Podcast and have Subscribed. I am currently caught up on all the episodes and wait with anticipation for the next episode to release. If you are a fan of Role Playing and Audio Dramas Caverns and Comedians is a great mixture of the two and I strongly suggest subscribing and giving them a listen.
