WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT CABLE
I had the title for this blog before a had even seen Deadpool 2. Rather than doing an out and out review I wanted to use the movie as a springboard to talk about the hopefully breakout star Cable. How he came on to my radar, what I like about him etcetera etcetera. However things change and I will be reviewing the movie quickly, then talking Cable and then wrapping up on a big positive.
I liked Deadpool 2, I didn’t love Deadpool 2. I get that sequels are tough to pull off. I can count on one hand the amount of times a sequel has been better than the first movie. This didn’t make me need another hand. But all that being said I can’t quite put my finger on why I don’t like it. The action was great, the cast was solid. The humour from the first movie was present again and there was more was more X-related content. Tim Miller said he left the project over creative differences. He stated he wanted to make a more personal movie rather than an over populated summer blockbuster. At times watching this I was wishing that stuck with Miller’s vision. After the movie I have a way of explaining why perhaps I didn’t like it. Deadpool belongs to the masses now. All the de hard Deadpool fans who have stuck with him through thick and thin now have to accept this is the content that comes with being a character to cater for the masses.
I have always had a soft spot for Cable. Even to the point that whenever I played X-Men Monopoly I would always be the Cable piece. My first exposure to Cable was the X-Men Animated series. Without knowing his comic book origins I just assumed he was a character to cash in on The Terminators success. I am from a generation where I was allowed to play with toy guns without fear of me becoming a homicidal maniac. Cable had a big gun so he appealed to me. I remember his ship was called Graymalkin. When I got more immersed in the comics and learnt the Xavier mansion was on Graymalkin Lane! Wow! I loved every actor that was linked to the role of Cable with Deadpool 2 in production. Kyle Chandler was Miller’s pick and I would love to have seen him on the role. He certainly would have been different. Josh Brolin done a brilliant job with what he was given. That is a phrase I seem to use a lot when reviewing comic book movies. It feels like at times the directors/writers want the name recognition by putting these characters in, but don’t really no how to handle them. They basically ruined his whole story with Hope. This movie was essentially Looper again. He had a wife and kid for crying out loud.
They can now never do a Hope storyline without it feeling like a rehash cause they know they made a mistake. His costume was horrible. He never should have taken that poncho off to reveal the full horrible extent of it. The arm and the gun were brilliant though! I think a character of Cable’s ilk has to be treated seriously he can’t be moulded to fit a tone that was so solidly cemented in the first movie. It is probably for the best his recent ongoing comics series was cancelled shortly before the movies release. I can’t imagine he would have gained too many new fans. If I had to recommend one Cable story it would be X-Sanction. It is a fun prelude to the AvX event and you can enjoy X-Sanction for what it is, you don’t need to read any of AvX after. It does a solid job building on the hear and soul of the Cable/Hope relationship. It also brilliantly showcases his best attributes. It shouldn’t come as a surprise as the son of Cyclops that he is an excellent strategist. It is fun reading as he single handedly takes on The Avenger, using all sorts of tech and time travel to aide his fight. My longest exposure to Cable was when he appeared in the Frank Tieri penned Weapon X. In it he led The Underground who were the opposing force to the newly reformed Weapon X. At the time and even more so looking back he didn’t seem a natural fit for that series. He may even have been going as Soldier X at the time. But Weapon X is my favourite series of all time any excuse to bring it up I’m going to take. Also one of his team member on The Underground leads nicely into my third act twist…
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT DOMINO
Before Deadpool 2 I would say Domino was already in my top three of female Marvel characters. She is the breakout star of this movie, the future X-Force movie is in a good place with her already onboard. Zazie Beetz killed it! She was charismatic, held your attention every time she was on screen, sassy, funny and all round just brilliant. Sure she need some fleshing out as a character but that can come. Her two main action scenes in the movie were without doubt the best bits of the entire movie. In my opinion Cable failed to match the hype. Whereas much like her character in the movie Domino flew under the radar and stole the show. I mentioned already how Cable’s recent ongoing has been cancelled. Coincidently in the comics it seems people can’t get enough of Domino at the moment. As well as being a team regular in Weapon X, she has a recently launched solo ongoing by the great Gail Simone. I’m going to have to try that out at some stage. Also she is currently guest staring in one of the many Hunt For Wolverine books in Mystery in Madripoor. Lastly and most surprisingly of all she has just been named an Avenger. Domino is definitely going placing and Deadpool 2 would be the perfect jump on point for anyone who wants to see a fun movie and come out with a new favourite character.
